Whaleboat Island Marine Provincial Park

Known as Eagle Island before becoming a provincial park in 1981, the small, rocky Whaleboat Island is part of the beautiful De Courcy Group of islands. These islands provide stunning paddling, boating and wildlife viewing opportunities around the interesting geological formations and sheltered intertidal shore. Inhospitable steep rocky banks have prevented any kind of development on Whaleboat Island, which is blanketed with second-growth forest.

Small marine islets like Whaleboat Island are important wildlife habitat as they are isolated from larger land predators. Birds like American black oystercatchers, pigeon guillemots, gulls and cormorants are potential nesters on these islands and marine mammals such as harbour seals, California and Steller’s sea lions and killer whales have been spotted foraging in the reefs offshore.

  • Cultural Heritage – Traditionally these islets were important to First Nations for bird egg gathering and food plant collection. In the 1940s there was a booming logging industry in the area and Whaleboat Island was logged. Remnants of this industry lie hidden in the now reforested understory.
Wildlife – Small marine islets like Whaleboat Island are important wildlife habitat as they are isolated from larger land predators. Birds like American black oystercatchers, pigeon guillemots, gulls and cormorants are potential nesters on these islands. Marine mammals such as harbour seals, California and Steller’s sea lions, orcas and dolphins have been spotted foraging in the reefs off the islands.

Whale Watching Ocean Ecoventures

Ocean EcoVentures started running whale watching tours in 2003 and has been creating “Life Experiences” ever since! We have taken thousands of passengers out to experience our diverse marine ecosystem that we call home. There is always a highlight on each trip that you will take away and never forget.

We are a small owner-operated family business that strives to make your adventure the best possible. You don’t get this kind of personal attention from the larger whale watching companies. Having fewer passengers in our boat creates magical moments and many passengers leave like old friends after their tour.

Travel the calm waters of the Salish Sea in search of Southern Resident Killer Whales, Biggs Killer Whales, Humpback Whales, Gray Whales and Minke Whales. You also have the chance to encounter Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, Harbour Seals, Dalls and Harbour Porpoise as well as a myriad of marine birds on your whale watching eco tour.

We are the most centrally located Whale Watching Company on Vancouver Island with the highest sighting of Killer Whales in British Columbia. We offer Small personal tour groups, with never more than 12 passengers on our boats.

We are Marine Wildlife Photography Specialists. Our longer tours ensure maximum viewing time with the whales and wildlife. We focus on the whole Salish Sea ecosystem. We are proud of our passionate, certified captains and our exemplary safety record.

We also offer private charters for groups and teams every size and inclination. Please contact us for more information on these charters.

Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre

The Nature Centre offers interactive opportunities for all ages to learn about the estuary, its watershed, marine life, and natural and cultural history.  Visitors can see and touch marine and intertidal creatures in our aquarium and touch tank; use our microscopes, telescopes and interactive displays, and enjoy wildlife and bird watching along our ocean front interpretive trail and from our viewing tower. Our dynamite team of part-time staff, nature educators and volunteers deliver school programs, summer camps, youth leadership training, citizen science projects and offer people of all ages opportunities to engage in hands-on restoration projects in the estuary and watershed.

Do you have children between the ages of 5 and 9?  We are excited to offer our popular five-day Nature and Science day camps again this summer starting July 6th. Children will learn about the birds, animals and plants of the Cowichan Estuary, explore the clam beds, eelgrass meadows, mudflats, and the beaches at Hecate Park, and have the same fun we have every summer with all the required Covid-19 physical distancing and health and safety protocols in place – a safe, learning-filled camp experience for children in small groups of no more than 12 campers.

Each camper will have their own learning package, including their own bucket and shovel to find out who lives here on the beach and in the estuary’s waters. They’ll also get to know the region’s inter-tidal and sea creatures in our salt water aquarium and observation tank and have an opportunity to get acquainted with young Coho salmon in our fresh water aquarium. There’ll be lots of other fun age-appropriate hands-on science activities, games, hikes, and crafts, where campers can play, learn and explore nature together and at a safe distance.

Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park

Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park, originally Carmanah Pacific Provincial Park, is a remote wilderness park located inside traditional Ditidaht First Nation ancestral territory. The park covers a land area of 16,450 ha immediately adjacent to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve’s West Coast Trail on the southwestern, coastal terrain of Vancouver Island. The provincial park comprises the entire drainage of Carmanah Creek, and a good portion of the lower Walbran River drainage, both of which independently empty into the Pacific Ocean. The park is named after Carmanah, meaning “thus far upstream” and John Thomas Walbran, a colonial explorer and ship’s captain. Access to the park is by gravel logging road from Port Alberni, Lake Cowichan, or Port Renfrew. The Carmanah Walbran protects extensive tracts of luxuriant Pacific temperate rainforest, and is famous for its ancient old growth, which includes giant western red cedar, coast Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and towering groves of Sitka spruce that grow along the productive riverside flats.

Several hiking trails in the Carmanah Valley provide access to many of the park’s notable natural features, including some of the area’s largest trees. Many sections of the trail are extremely muddy and difficult. Be equipped with appropriate clothing (including adequate rain gear) and good hiking boots.

Date Established: March 13, 1991
Park Size: 16,365 hectares
