Japanese History in Nanaimo

September 14 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

At the first fall meeting of the Nanaimo Historical Society, we will be exploring the history of Japanese settlement and industry in Nanaimo, with guest speaker Tami Hirasawa from the Nanaimo Japanese Canadian Cultural Society (the 7 Potatoes, which is what the word Nanaimo sounds like in Japanese).

Tami is Nikkei Sansei (3rd Generation Japanese Canadian). She is pleased to be the President of the 7 Potatoes which she was appointed in May 2021. Originally from Hamilton Ontario, she currently studies Classical Japanese Dance (Nihon Buyo) with her teacher, Mari Kaneta of Suzuyuki-Kai in Arizona. Tami and her husband Dave practice the art of Iaido (Japanese Swordsmanship) with Todo-kai in Nanaimo.

Join us and learn more about this important part of Nanaimo’s history. Refreshments will follow the presentation. All are welcome.
